Thrifting tips - How to make the most of your experience!
I've been thrifting since I was about 20. At first, it seemed pretty pointless because I had zero patience. I wasn't used to having to search through racks upon racks on clothing, to maybe find one or two pieces of clothing I liked. I, like most girls that age, was used to walking into a mall, seeing something I liked and knowing they'd probably have my size & boom. Done. The down side to that is while you may find one shirt at a mall for $20, you can find 5 at a Goodwill/other thrift store. You wouldn't believe how much clothing I find that still has the original store tag on it. I've put together some basic tips to make the most out of your experience, remember patience is always key! :)
1.) ASK. Don’t be afraid to ask when new merchandise is going to be brought out, from my experience this can sometimes be hourly.
2.) TAGS. Goodwill has days/weeks that certain color tags mean that particular item is 50% off the already reasonable price. Most of the time it is pictured somewhere in the front of the store, if not ask an associate and they can let you know.
3.) HOLIDAYS. Now, not every Goodwill does this, but I know some stores often have “50% entire store” sales that fall on every Holiday(if that store is open on that particular one). This is when you can score major swag, it’s a very magical experience…for realz.
4.) COUPON. That probably goes well with already being frugal, eh? Most Goodwills will give you a 20% off entire purchase coupon for donating to their store. Mine are usually valid Mon-Thurs, but as far as I know they don’t expire. Bringing a coupon to a thrift store is pretty much the ultimate win in my book.
5.) GRAB IT. If you think you might like it/purchase it….grab it! Thrift stores aren’t like retail stores, there won’t be several more of any particular item in your particular size. Goodwills have dressing rooms & a return policy as well, so if you get it home & decide it’s not for you, no worries! Leave the tag on though, pleaseeee. To me finding something is definitely the thrill of the bargain hunt - you will be suprised what major designer brands you’ll find in a thrift store.
6.) TAKE YOUR TIME. Seriously, take your time. Be patient and look through all of the racks of your size/desired item. Sometimes things will be misplaced so you really never know when you’ll snag some treasure! I’ve found a pair of brand new leapord print booties….in a picture frame bin. Once again, it’s the thrill of finding that thrift shop swag! That’s all I can think of at the moment. Happy bargain hunting lovelies!
